By Nora Nova, M.Ed | Therapist in Philadelphia

Congratulations on your engagement! Did you know that couples who seek counseling before their wedding have a 30% higher martial success rate than those who do not? Premarital preparation can help increase your understanding of each other, enhance your connectedness and strengthen your marriage.

What to Expect From the Prepare/Enrich Program

Our therapists who offer premarital counseling are trained Prepare/Enrich facilitators. Prepare/Enrich is a highly researched and widely used premarital counseling program. While going through the program, you will take a 30-minute online assessment which will provide a detailed report of your strength and growth areas. Based on your results, the facilitator will guide you through ~8 feedback/psychoeducation sessions to teach you proven relationship tools and skills.

Topics Covered

Some of the topics covered in the assessment and the program include the following:

  • Communication

  • Conflict Resolution

  • Financial Management

  • Relationship Roles

  • Sex and Affection

  • Children and Parenting

Benefits of Premarital Counseling

Premarital counseling can help strengthen your relationship by:

  • Teaching you how to be assertive speakers and active listeners, so both of you can communicate your needs and feel understood

  • Helping you learn conflict resolution skills so you can support each other throughout the marriage

  • Guiding you through important but often avoided conversations, such as finances (a survey found that 34% of cohabiting couples could not correctly identify how much money their partner makes!)

  • Exploring and setting realistic expectations around various marriage topics, such as household responsibilities

  • Establishing a shared vision and ensuring you are discussing your future goals and dreams

  • Gaining insight and discovering new information about yourself and your partner
