Tips for Building Self Esteem

By Emma Mahony, MA , Therapist in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Do you struggle with feeling that you’re just not good enough? Do you engage in negative self talk or feel like you're unable to shift into a more positive mindset? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then it’s time to focus on improving your self esteem.

Self esteem is the belief and understanding of your individual value and worth, and if yours is low or you’re lacking it completely, it probably creates a lot of the suffering or difficulties that you're currently facing or have previously experienced in your life.. When you work on building and then maintaining a healthy self esteem, many areas of your life will begin to improve significantly..

Here are some tips to help you improve your self esteem:

  • Identify triggers - understand what people, places, or situations cause you to feel insecure or produce negative thought patterns and behaviors. Notice when these emotions come up and take note of them through journaling or even on your phone.

  • Challenge thinking - Once you identify situations that produce insecurity, reflect on the negative messages you produce in these scenarios. Are they based in truth? How can you shift the messaging of your inner critic?

  • List your accomplishments - When you’re stuck in a negative mindset, you can often only identify your mistakes. Start making note of the things you’ve done that you’re proud of. Before bed you can list 3 things you are happy you did that day.

  • Understand your values - What is most important to you in life? Is your current way of living reflecting the type of life you want to live? Understanding what motivates you can help you have a better relationship with yourself and those around you.

  • Heal your past - Subconsciously or consciously you may not be allowing yourself to move forward due to past experiences. Working through challenging feelings and thoughts from the past can allow you to be more optimistic about the future.

How therapy can help:

You may be overwhelmed with where to begin or how to implement practices to improve your self esteem. A therapist can help. Working with a therapist can help you identify your triggers and help you challenge your thought patterns. You will also be able to get a better understanding of your values, and what is meaningful for you moving forward. Having support and guidance can be crucial as you develop and deepen your relationship with yourself to live a more meaningful life.
