Sand Tray Therapy

Article by Linda Schuler, LPC

Sand tray therapy is a non verbal means of expression.  Utilizing a tray of sand, the ‘builder’ (client) creates a scene  by placing objects in the sand. It is a method of play therapy  and can be beneficial for children, teens and adults. This type  of therapy allows the subconscious mind to connect with the  conscious mind in a non-threatening, three dimensional  manner.

The figures, or objects available to the builder have subtle  meaning. The therapist observes the selection and placement  of the figures, often non-verbally and allows the builder to  safely create a scene while engaging their tactile, sensory  and emotive pathways in the brain.

Sand tray therapy offers a non-judgmental visual opportunity  for clients to express, release and heal. It allows the therapist  an opportunity to deepen their understanding of their client  and it’s fun!

Sand tray therapy has been a form of expressive therapy for  children since the 1920’s. This method allows for expression  without the potential limitations of art and movement.  Similar to Montessori philosophy, it allows a safe place for  the client to express emotions, perhaps repressed, and  allows the therapist a pathway to more deeply assist the  client in their healing journey. This method of therapy is  beneficial to all ages and stages of life.
