Ask The Expert: Unscripted Relationships
Every Friday, we #asktheexpert to tell us more about their specialization, as we believe that there is so much knowledge out there that should be shared! This week, we were lucky enough to hear from Dr. S. Kay Webb, from Unscripted Relationships. I love following Dr. Webb on Instagram @unscriptedrelationships - her posts are interesting, resourceful, and fresh - and she speaks directly towards the name of her business - everything that is left "unscripted in society" - i.e. outside the normative relationships we are used to seeing. See below to read more of her thoughts and make sure you follow her or visit her website.
Happy Friday, Elizabeth Earnshaw, LMFT My name is Dr. S. Kay Webb and I am the creator of Unscripted Relationships. In Western culture, we are embedded in cultural scripts that tell us how to perform romantic relationships. We are expected to find a "one and only," get married, have babies, and continue happily ever after in a suburban single family home. While this works for some people, for many it does not - and this script becomes stifling and hurtful. In my research and work with clients, I help deconstruct this script and create new ways to relate, ways that are authentic to what they want and need.Deconstructing the script of monogamy often leads people to open relationships, including monogamish, open, and polyamorous relationships. It is imperative to develop effective communication skills for all types of relationships, but those seeking open relating are regularly told how much communication matters. My PhD and specialty is communication - I help people develop the communication skills to use their words effectively. To do this, we must first understand the culture that influences us. Then, we must turn our gaze internally, and really work to understand ourselves. Finally, we can engage in conversations that are co-created, while we hone skills like listening and curiosity. I hope to help people understand the significance of their words and the importance of being intentional with communication.
