Mental Health Evaluations for the Peace corps
Comprehensive mental health evaluations for Peace Corps medical clearance
If you have been asked to complete a mental health evaluation as part of the Peace Corps medical clearance process, A Better Life Therapy can help.
Our clinicians provide comprehensive, individualized evaluations designed to address the information requested by the Peace Corps. Depending on the requirements of your evaluation and your clinical history, the process may include a detailed psychosocial interview, review of relevant mental health records, communication with previous treatment providers or other professionals, and completion of the required evaluation and documentation.
We work with applicants throughout Pennsylvania and, when clinically and legally appropriate, can provide evaluations through telehealth. We also have clinicians licensed in New Jersey, Massachusetts, New York, Delaware, and Florida.
What Is a Peace Corps Mental Health Evaluation?
As part of the medical clearance process, some Peace Corps applicants are asked to provide additional information about their mental health history or complete a mental health evaluation.
The specific information requested varies from person to person. An evaluation may be requested to help the Peace Corps medical team better understand an applicant's current functioning, treatment history, past mental health concerns, or other aspects of their clinical history.
A mental health evaluation is different from ongoing therapy. The purpose is to conduct an independent clinical assessment and provide the requested documentation based on the information available to the evaluator.
What Does the Evaluation Include?
We tailor each evaluation to the requirements of the individual applicant. Depending on what has been requested, the evaluation may include:
Records requests and review within a defined scope
Up to two hours of clinical interviewing and psychosocial assessment
Collateral consultation with prior treatment providers or other professionals, when appropriate and authorized
Clinical assessment and synthesis of the information obtained
Completion of required forms
A written evaluation and recommendations
One reasonable clarification or administrative follow-up related to the completed evaluation
Our goal is to gather the information necessary to provide a thorough, clinically appropriate evaluation without requiring applicants to repeat unnecessary steps or provide information outside the scope of the request.
How Does the Process Work?
1. Send Us Your Peace Corps Request
Before scheduling, we will review the documentation you have received from the Peace Corps so we can understand what has been requested and determine whether our clinicians are able to complete the evaluation.
2. We Gather Relevant Information
With your authorization, we may request and review relevant mental health or medical records and, when appropriate, communicate with previous treatment providers or other professionals who can provide information relevant to the evaluation.
3. Complete the Clinical Interview
You will meet with the evaluating clinician for a comprehensive psychosocial interview. The interview may take up to two hours depending on the requirements of the evaluation and your individual history.
4. Clinical Review and Evaluation
The clinician integrates the information from your interview, records, and collateral sources to develop an independent clinical assessment.
5. Documentation
We complete the requested Peace Corps forms and provide the written evaluation and recommendations required within the scope of the assessment.
How Much Does a Peace Corps Evaluation Cost?
Fees range from $500–$1,800 for a full evaluation.
The cost depends on the scope and complexity of the evaluation, including the amount of records that need to be reviewed, the need for collateral consultation, and the level of documentation requested. It also is related to the clinician and their level of experience.
Your evaluation fee includes the components outlined above. If additional work is requested beyond the original scope of the evaluation, we will discuss any additional fees with you before proceeding.
Can Peace Corps Reimburse Me for the Evaluation?
Some Peace Corps applicants may be eligible for reimbursement of required medical-clearance expenses, including qualifying mental health evaluations.
Because reimbursement requirements can vary based on the applicant's specific medical-clearance process, applicants should review their Peace Corps instructions and confirm reimbursement requirements directly with Peace Corps before scheduling.
We can provide documentation of the evaluation fee and services provided for your records.
What Should I Bring to My Evaluation?
Please provide the Peace Corps documentation identifying the evaluation or information that has been requested before your appointment.
If you have previously received mental health treatment, it may also be helpful to have information about:
Previous therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, or other treatment providers
Dates and approximate duration of treatment
Previous diagnoses, if applicable
Medication history
Hospitalizations or higher levels of care, if applicable
Relevant medical or mental health records
You do not need to obtain every record on your own. When appropriate and authorized, our clinicians can request relevant records as part of the evaluation process.
An Independent Clinical Evaluation
A Peace Corps mental health evaluation is an assessment, not a therapy appointment and not a guarantee of medical clearance.
Our clinicians provide an independent assessment based on the information available to them, including your clinical interview, relevant records, and collateral information when applicable. The completed evaluation reflects the clinician's professional findings and recommendations.
The Peace Corps makes its own medical-clearance determination.
Who Provides These Evaluations?
Peace Corps evaluations are completed by appropriately qualified clinicians at A Better Life Therapy based on the requirements of the individual evaluation and the clinician's scope of practice.
Our practice includes clinicians with experience conducting comprehensive mental health, forensic, immigration, and other specialized evaluations.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a Peace Corps mental health evaluation take?
The clinical interview may take up to two hours. The overall evaluation process can take longer because the clinician may need to request and review records, communicate with previous providers, and prepare the required documentation.
Do I need to have all of my records before scheduling?
Not necessarily. Depending on the evaluation, our clinician may be able to request relevant records with your authorization. We will discuss what information is needed during the initial process.
Can you speak with my previous therapist or psychiatrist?
Yes, when collateral information from a previous provider is relevant to the evaluation and appropriate authorization has been provided.
Do you provide the Peace Corps forms?
We complete the forms or documentation provided as part of your assigned evaluation, within the scope of the evaluation being conducted.
Is the evaluation the same as therapy?
No. This is a formal clinical evaluation rather than an ongoing therapy appointment. The clinician's role is to assess the information relevant to the request and provide independent clinical documentation.
Can you guarantee that I will receive medical clearance?
No. Our clinicians provide an independent evaluation and document their clinical findings. The Peace Corps makes the final medical-clearance determination.
How much does the evaluation cost?
Full evaluations range from $500–$1,800, depending on the experience of the evaluator, scope and complexity of the evaluation.
