Emotional Support Animal (ESA) Evaluations
Compassionate, Professional ESA Evaluations
An emotional support animal can be an important source of comfort and support for someone living with a mental health condition or disability. If you are considering an emotional support animal and need professional documentation, A Better Life Therapy offers individualized Emotional Support Animal (ESA) evaluations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Our clinicians take time to understand your mental health, daily functioning, and the role an animal may play in supporting your well-being. An ESA evaluation is a clinical assessment, not simply a form or letter, and recommendations are based on your individual circumstances.
We provide ESA evaluations at our offices in Center City Philadelphia, Fishtown, Ardmore, New Hope, and Easton, Pennsylvania, and Galloway, New Jersey.
Contact A Better Life Therapy to learn more about scheduling an ESA evaluation.
What Is an Emotional Support Animal?
An emotional support animal may provide comfort or emotional support that helps a person manage the effects of a disability. Unlike a service animal, an emotional support animal does not need to be trained to perform a specific task to provide emotional support.
People may explore an ESA as part of managing the impact of mental health concerns on their everyday lives. An evaluation considers whether there is a clinically supported, disability-related need for an animal in the context of the person's circumstances and intended use.
ESA documentation is most commonly requested in connection with housing accommodations. The rules that apply depend on the setting and the applicable law. An ESA letter does not automatically establish a right to bring an animal into every public space, workplace, or other setting.
Why Is an ESA Evaluation Necessary?
An ESA evaluation helps determine whether an emotional support animal may be appropriate in light of your mental health needs and circumstances. It also gives the evaluating clinician an opportunity to understand how you function day to day and how an animal may relate to the challenges you experience.
During the evaluation, your clinician may explore:
Your current emotional and psychological well-being.
Relevant mental health symptoms and their impact on daily functioning.
Your experience with animals and the role an animal plays in your life.
The specific accommodation you are seeking and the reason for your request.
Whether the information supports a disability-related need for an emotional support animal.
Whether additional information or assessment is needed before a recommendation can be made.
An evaluation does not guarantee that an ESA letter will be issued. If the available information does not support a recommendation, the clinician will discuss that with you.
ESA Evaluations Are Separate From Ongoing Therapy
ESA evaluations at A Better Life Therapy are conducted separately from ongoing therapy with your current therapist.
This means that your existing therapist cannot simply write an ESA letter as part of your regular therapy relationship through this service. Instead, you will meet with a clinician for a separate evaluation focused specifically on your request for emotional support animal documentation.
Keeping the evaluation separate allows the clinician to consider the referral question, gather relevant information, and develop an independent professional opinion about your circumstances.
If you are currently receiving therapy at A Better Life Therapy, please let us know when you contact us. We can discuss the appropriate process for arranging a separate evaluation.
What to Expect During an ESA Evaluation
1. Schedule an Evaluation
Contact our office to discuss your request, the purpose of the evaluation, and the information you may need to provide. Our team can help you understand the next steps and identify an appropriate location.
2. Meet With a Clinician
You will meet with a clinician for an assessment of your relevant mental health history, current concerns, daily functioning, and the role an animal may play in supporting your needs.
3. Clinical Review
The clinician will consider the information gathered during the evaluation and determine whether it supports a recommendation for ESA documentation. Additional information may be requested when appropriate.
4. Receive Feedback About the Outcome
Following the evaluation, the clinician will explain their findings and whether they can provide documentation based on the assessment. A letter is provided only when the clinician determines that the available information supports it.
Who Can Benefit From an ESA Evaluation?
You may wish to explore an ESA evaluation if:
You are experiencing mental health concerns that affect your everyday functioning.
You believe an animal provides meaningful support related to the effects of a disability.
You are seeking professional assessment and documentation for a housing-related accommodation.
You want to better understand whether an emotional support animal may be appropriate for your circumstances.
You do not need to assume that you qualify before scheduling a conversation with our team. The purpose of the evaluation is to assess your individual needs and determine whether a recommendation is clinically supported.

Frequently Asked Questions About ESA Evaluations
Can my current therapist write my ESA letter?
ESA evaluations offered through A Better Life Therapy are separate from ongoing therapy. Your current therapist cannot complete this service as an extension of your regular therapy sessions. Contact our team to discuss arranging a separate evaluation.
Does completing an evaluation guarantee an ESA letter?
No. An evaluation is an individualized clinical assessment. Documentation is provided only when the clinician determines that the information supports a recommendation.
What is an ESA letter used for?
ESA documentation is most commonly sought to support a request for a housing-related accommodation. Whether an accommodation is appropriate depends on the relevant law and the individual circumstances. An ESA letter does not guarantee approval by a housing provider.
Is an emotional support animal the same as a service animal?
No. Service animals and emotional support animals are different categories and may be covered by different legal protections. Emotional support animals do not automatically have the same access rights as service animals in public places.
