A Better Life Therapy’s Center for Trauma

Specialized Trauma Therapy in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Online

Trauma can affect how we feel, how we relate to others, and how we experience the world around us. Whether you are coping with a single overwhelming experience, painful memories from childhood, ongoing stress, or the effects of difficult relationships, healing is possible with the right support.

At A Better Life Therapy, we offer specialized, compassionate trauma therapy for children, teens, adults, couples, and families. Our clinicians bring advanced training in evidence-based and trauma-informed approaches, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), and mindfulness-based practices.

As a connected, multidisciplinary practice, we help clients find a therapist whose experience, approach, and availability fit their needs. You do not have to navigate the process alone.

Reach out to A Better Life Therapy to find a trauma therapist who can help you take the next step toward healing.

What Is Trauma?

Trauma can occur when an experience overwhelms a person's ability to cope or leaves them feeling unsafe, powerless, or deeply distressed. Some experiences are clearly traumatic, such as abuse, violence, accidents, or sudden loss. Others may involve repeated exposure to stress, neglect, instability, or painful relationship experiences over time.

Trauma affects everyone differently. Some people experience intrusive memories, nightmares, anxiety, or heightened alertness. Others notice emotional numbness, difficulty trusting people, shame, disconnection, or patterns in relationships that are hard to change.

You do not need to have a specific diagnosis or know exactly what to call your experience to benefit from therapy. If something from your past or present is affecting your sense of safety, relationships, or well-being, a trauma-informed therapist can help you understand what is happening and explore ways to move forward.

Our Specialized Trauma Treatment Approaches

Trauma therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Our clinicians draw from different therapeutic approaches to help clients process difficult experiences, build emotional regulation skills, and develop a greater sense of safety and connection.

EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy that helps people process distressing memories and experiences. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or other alternating sensory input, as part of a structured treatment process.

EMDR may help reduce the emotional intensity associated with traumatic memories and support clients in developing more adaptive beliefs about themselves and their experiences.

At A Better Life Therapy, we have clinicians with specialized EMDR training, including EMDRIA-certified therapists. Treatment is tailored to each client's needs, readiness, and goals.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Parts-Informed Therapy

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an approach that understands the mind as containing different parts, each with its own feelings, beliefs, and protective roles. Some parts may work hard to prevent rejection, avoid painful memories, or keep difficult emotions under control.

In trauma therapy, parts-informed work can help clients approach these experiences with curiosity and compassion rather than judgment. With the support of a trained therapist, clients can better understand protective patterns, build internal trust, and develop a more compassionate relationship with themselves.

Our clinicians with IFS training may integrate parts-informed principles into treatment when appropriate for the client's needs and goals.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment developed for children and adolescents who have experienced trauma. It combines coping and emotional regulation skills with gradual, developmentally appropriate processing of traumatic experiences.

TF-CBT may also involve caregivers, helping families strengthen communication, support recovery, and respond to a child's needs with greater understanding.

Our clinicians use trauma-informed and developmentally appropriate approaches to help young clients feel supported as they work through difficult experiences.

Mindfulness-Based Trauma Therapy

Mindfulness-based practices can help clients develop awareness of their thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations while learning to respond with greater steadiness and self-compassion.

In trauma therapy, mindfulness may support grounding, emotional regulation, and reconnection with the present moment. These practices are adapted to each person's needs, since focusing inward can sometimes feel difficult or overwhelming for people with trauma histories.

Our clinicians may incorporate mindfulness practices alongside other therapeutic approaches to help clients build skills for managing distress and feeling more connected to themselves.

Trauma Therapy for Children, Teens, Adults, Couples, and Families

Trauma can affect people at every stage of life, and healing may look different depending on a person's age, experiences, and relationships.

Children and Teens

Children and adolescents may express trauma through behavior, anxiety, sleep difficulties, withdrawal, irritability, or challenges at school and home. Our therapists use developmentally appropriate approaches to help young people feel safe, understand their experiences, and build coping skills.

When helpful, parents and caregivers can be involved in treatment to support progress outside the therapy room. For young children we offer Sand Tray Therapy and Play Therapy to help them process their experiences and feelings.

Adults

Adults may seek trauma therapy to address painful memories, anxiety, emotional overwhelm, relationship patterns, or experiences that continue to affect their daily lives. Therapy can help clients understand the connection between past experiences and present reactions while developing new ways to feel grounded and connected.

Couples and Families

Trauma can affect the way partners and family members communicate, respond to stress, and experience closeness. When appropriate, therapy can help loved ones understand the impact of trauma, strengthen emotional safety, and build more supportive ways of relating.

A Better Life Therapy is a family practice for mental health. This means we can consider the broader family system when making recommendations and, when appropriate, provide individual, couples, or family therapy within the same practice.

Our Trauma-Trained Clinicians

Our clinicians bring a range of clinical backgrounds and specialized training to trauma treatment. Depending on the therapist, this may include EMDR training or EMDRIA certification, IFS training, TF-CBT training, and mindfulness-based approaches.

We believe that effective trauma therapy begins with a strong therapeutic relationship. Our team works to create a respectful, collaborative environment where clients can move at a pace that feels manageable. When you contact us, our team can help identify a clinician whose training, experience, and availability align with your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Trauma Therapy

Do I need to have PTSD to benefit from trauma therapy?

No. Trauma therapy may help people who are experiencing the effects of difficult or overwhelming experiences, even if they do not meet the criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A therapist can help you determine what kind of support may be appropriate.

Do I have to talk about everything that happened to me?

No. You are not expected to share every detail before you feel ready. Your therapist will work with you to establish safety, build coping skills, and determine a pace that feels manageable.

How do I know whether EMDR, IFS, or another approach is right for me?

Different approaches can be helpful for different people and concerns. Your therapist will consider your history, goals, current coping skills, and preferences when developing a treatment plan. You do not need to choose a modality before reaching out.

Can children receive trauma therapy?

Yes. Children and adolescents can benefit from developmentally appropriate trauma treatment. Depending on the child's needs, therapy may include play-based techniques, coping skills, trauma-focused interventions, and caregiver involvement.

Does A Better Life Therapy offer trauma therapy online?

We offer online therapy in Pennsylvania and New Jersey when clinically appropriate and consistent with the therapist's licensure and the client's needs.
