Feeling Stuck in Your Career? Career Counseling Can Help
Article by SEAN AVELLINI,LAPC
At some point, many of us feel uncertain or stuck in our careers. Maybe you're questioning your current path, or unsure of where to even start. Having walked my own winding career journey—from finance, to academia, to counseling—I know how complicated and overwhelming career uncertainty can feel. My lived experience makes me passionate about helping others navigate their own career questions.
Career counseling is designed to help you gain clarity and direction. The process I offer is structured yet personalized, typically unfolding over three focused sessions. These sessions are centered around two assessments: the Myers-Briggs and the Strong Interest Inventory. Together, these tools provide a blend of insights that can illuminate potential jobs and career paths aligned with who you are.
Session 1: Starting the Journey
The first session is an introductory conversation where we’ll explore what’s bringing you to career counseling. We’ll talk about your current situation, your past experiences, your questions, and your goals. After this session, you’ll complete the Myers-Briggs and Strong Interest Inventory assessments, which will lay the foundation for deeper insights.
Session 2: Discovering Insights
In the second session, we’ll review your assessment results together. The Myers-Briggs will help us understand your personality preferences—how you process information, make decisions, and relate to the world around you. The Strong Interest Inventory will help you understand what you find naturally stimulating, and how that aligns with various careers, industries, and work environments. This session often sparks meaningful “aha” moments as you begin seeing connections between who you are and what might fulfill you.
Session 3: Clarity and Next Steps
The final session focuses on pulling everything together. We’ll organize your insights and discuss potential next steps, whether that’s exploring specific career paths, developing new skills, or clarifying your values and priorities.
Beyond the Three Sessions
While most clients find clarity within these three sessions, there’s always flexibility to continue with more traditional counseling if you’d like deeper support—whether that’s enhancing self-awareness, working through emotional blocks, or strengthening your sense of self.
Regardless, my goal is to offer a process that’s not just informative but compassionate—a space where you can feel truly supported as you discover new directions. If you feel ready to take this step, I invite you to reach out. It would be my pleasure to help you on your journey.
