How Online Therapy Works
What to Expect
By: Deirdre Cosgrove
If online therapy is a new experience for you, it’s possible you’re feeling some anxiety about the process. Don’t let nerves stop you from connecting virtually with your therapist! Online therapy creates the space to connect when it’s not possible or preferable to meet in-person.
Let’s break down what to expect from your session:
Your therapist will confirm your appointment and send you an access link that's unique to you. You will use that link to enter your session. You likely won’t have to download an app or program (you can check with your therapist beforehand to be certain).
Think about where you would like to set up for your session. It’s important to have privacy and to feel physically comfortable. You can sit on the couch, in bed, or even in your car! Find a spot that works best for you.
Check on your equipment. Make sure your phone or computer are charged, and use headphones if you like!
Feel free to do what’s needed to feel comfortable during the session. Bring a cup of tea or coffee, and have water nearby. If your pet wants to wander over, that’s okay!
When it’s time for your session, use the link sent by your therapist. Your therapist will be on already, or will join in shortly.
That’s it! Enjoy your session.
Remember, your therapist will have worked on their end to ensure that they are in a private space and can give full attention to you during your session.
Online therapy provides the ability to maintain connection, stability and support from your therapist when circumstances don't allow you to meet in person. If you’re still uncertain, give it a try and you will be surprised how quickly you settle into the virtual therapy room.
