Common Signs of Anxiety

By: Jenny Midence-Blaszczyk, MS

Anxiety is a common experience for many people. One of the most common reasons that people attend therapy is for anxiety symptoms. However, many people don’t necessarily recognize that what they are experiencing is anxiety. In this article, you will find common signs of anxiety.

Why is it important to recognize anxiety?

The first step towards being able to overcome anxiety is to be able to recognize and name what you are experiencing. By learning about common symptoms and experiences of people who have anxiety, you will be able to begin your path towards relief.

5 Signs of Anxiety:

Here are some telltale signs you are experiencing anxiety:

  • Scanning your body, mood, and thoughts for signs of “danger”

  • Constantly feeling like something bad is about to happen

  • Having an increased heart rate

  • Breathing rapidly (hyperventilation)

  • Sweating

What’s next?

Once you recognize that what you might be experiencing is anxiety, seeing a therapist trained in treating anxiety can help. During your treatment, you will begin to incorporate techniques that can regulate you and reduce anxiety symptoms.

The 3-3-3 Technique for Anxiety

One such technique is the 3-3-3 rule. This technique is highly effective when you feel like your brain is going 100 miles a minute. To use this technique:

  1. Name three things you see.

  2. Name three sounds you hear.

  3. Move three parts of your body — your ankle, fingers, or arm, for example

The 3-3-3, in this context, is a tool for emotional grounding. Some consider this technique a trick to distract your brain because we know anxiety and feelings of overwhelm are often results of feeling like things are out of your control. Therefore, by engaging your senses with this exercise, you can shift your awareness to the present. With the intent to gain awareness and reassurance that there are still things that are within your control.

Anxiety is incredibly uncomfortable and can be disruptive to your life. However, there are many treatments for managing anxiety. To learn about how our office can help, read more about our therapists or email our office at info@abetterlifetherapy.com
