The First Four Sessions: Assessment Practices that will Help your Clients Feel Seen & Supported in Therapy

The first four sessions of the therapy journey are the most important. These sessions help you to conceptualize and plan for treatment. They also are the sessions where your client is deciding how they feel about you - they are looking to see - are they understanding me? Do they have a plan for me? Will my life start to feel better by working with them? Do they like me? Are they skilled in what they do? Are they confident?

And, in our experience, if you do not answer "yes" to each of these questions client's are likely to decide it is not a good fit for them. Offering clients understanding, a plan for getting better, showing that you like them, and being confident and clear about your skills improves retention.

Your client made the brave call to come to therapy, it's our job to help them stay (as long as it truly is the right fit!) so they can get the help they are looking for.
