What made you want to become a therapist?
After studying psychology at Georgetown as an undergrad, I was unsure what path I wanted to pursue. After graduation I took a gap year to explore what I wanted to do. It was actually my mom who encouraged me to look into becoming a therapist! She pointed out that I have always loved talking with people and problem-solving, and encouraged me to follow what I enjoyed doing and make it into a career. Thanks Mom!
What are your specialties?
I have a special interest in helping clients improve the quality of their relationships! Whether it be a romantic relationship, or family and friends, I enjoy helping others deepen the quality of their connections. I also have a great deal of experience working with families who are struggling to handle a child’s emotional or behavioral challenges.
Why do you believe therapy can help?
I believe therapy can lead to clarity and action for situations that appear hopeless and intractable. It can open up new opportunities for growth and connection! I love being able to help clients through this process.
When should people seek counseling?
I believe the best time to seek counseling is when you begin to realize that you’re feeling unsatisfied, stuck or confused in regards to your relationships. We all experience periods when we may feel unhappy, lonely, anxious or distressed. This is what it means to be human! However, if you start to feel that this is becoming more of a pattern, it should be a sign to seek counseling.
What are your favorite self care activities?
I love doing yoga and try to incorporate a short practice into each day. I highly recommend Yoga with Adriene on YouTube! I also find any time I can connect with family and friends to be restorative. If you would like to read more about Deirdre visit her Therapist Profile.
