The Physical Impacts of Trauma

Article By: Jenny Midence-Blaszczyk

It is important to understand that this is our brain and body’s way of protecting us. Also, trauma impacts everyone differently and as such, our experiences will be unique. For example, you may only experience one or some while others experience all physical symptoms and the more awareness you gain, the more helpful it will be to process when you cannot remember a trauma.

The following are some physical impacts that may be things you did not consider to be trauma responses:

The first and most common one I see when working with individuals with a history of trauma is memory repression.

It can show up in 3 ways:

·         No Recollection of events in childhood

·         Fragments and parts of memories

·         Have full memory of events, but no emotion attached to it

The next are possible physical signs:

Be aware that this is how our body keeps the score when it comes to trauma.

·         Racing heart

·         Stomach discomfort

·         Chronic illness

·         Cardiac issues

·         Sleep issues

·         Breathing difficulties

·         Physical muscle and joint pain

·         Dizziness/headaches

·         Fainting/legs giving out

If you are wondering how past trauma can impact your present day: Imagine you are in the middle of being playful with a new partner and suddenly the body remembers a tone, a movement, or a sensation that puts your body on alert. The memory is stored in the emotional part of the brain and will perceive danger cues in your environment. Logically, you know you are safe with them; however, your body feels otherwise. Feeling safe needs to be restored in your body. Trauma therapy can help!
