Couples Therapy 101 Series:

CEU Approved

Substance Use and Relationships

One in ten Americans are in recovery. 21 million Americans suffer with addiction. If you are a therapist working with couples, it is likely that you will come across either active addiction, substance misuse, or a person (or people) in recovery.

However, couples therapists aren’t often equipped to talk about, understand, or support people through therapy in a way to takes into account this very real part of their relationship. Often, couples therapists are told to turn away couples who struggle with substances. However, this doesn’t often help. Rather, leaves people feeling hopeless and unsupported. Other therapists might not know what to ask to assess for the issues. And, even if so, they might now know what to do next.

In this session, couples therapist Ariel Stern, LPC, CGT will teach you how to assess for substance use issues and how to work with the couple when this is present or is a part of their history.

Ariel Stern, LPC, CGT is a certified Gottman Therapist with extensive experience working with individuals and couples struggling with substances. She will use her years of experience to guide you through exactly how to support couples as they navigate the issue of substances within their relationship

In this session, you’ll learn:

1. How to assess for substance use issues

2. How to work with a couple with present or past substance use issues
