Meet Mary
MARY FUNG-A-FAT, LPC
“Your experiences matter, your emotions are valid…”
During these times, it’s natural to seek support, clarity, and a steady presence. I offer a compassionate, grounded space where you don’t have to navigate these moments alone. With openness and care, I walk alongside you as you make meaning of your experiences and reconnect with your inner strength.
You are the author of your own story. My role is not to rewrite it, but to be a thoughtful collaborator. I aim to help you explore the chapters that feel confusing, heavy, or unresolved, and support you as you move toward greater balance, authenticity, and well-being. Your experiences matter, your emotions are valid, and you deserve a space where you feel seen, heard, and understood.
A Holistic and Relational Approach
In recognizing your individuality, I've embraced an eclectic approach to therapy. Drawing from mindfulness, relational-cultural, and psychodynamic techniques, my aim is to provide you with a personalized roadmap to healing and self-discovery. Together, we will weave these approaches into a tapestry that suits your specific needs, aspirations, and challenges.
From Athletics to Counseling: A Passion Unveiled
I take an eclectic, integrative approach to therapy that honors the whole person. Drawing from mindfulness-based practices, Rogerian theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the Gottman Method, and Relational Life Therapy (RLT) – informed by my training with Terry Real.
I tailor therapy to your unique needs and goals by paying attention not only to insight and self-awareness, but also to how patterns show up in your life and relationships. I believe that to fully understand yourself, we need to look at your past. The foundation of my work starts with assessing family dynamics and childhood experiences, upon which we explore how those patterns may be influencing your current experiences.
From Athletics to Counseling
My background as a professional athlete and coach deeply shapes my work as a therapist. Years of coaching individuals from diverse backgrounds and competing taught me about discipline, resilience, vulnerability, and the emotional worlds people carry with them—often unseen. These experiences sparked my passion for counseling and continue to inform my belief in growth through both challenge and support.
Collaboration and Empowerment
Therapy is a collaborative process. You bring your lived experience; I bring curiosity, structure, and evidence-based tools. Together, we work to clarify what’s no longer serving you, strengthen what already exists within you, and build skills that support healthier relationships, deeper self-trust, and meaningful change. My goal is for you to leave therapy feeling more empowered, grounded, and aligned with your values.
Who I Work With
Coming from Caribbean heritage, I have a particular interest in working with immigrants and expats navigating cultural transitions, identity, belonging, and adjustment to life in the U.S. I also work with individuals and couples from all backgrounds who are seeking greater self-understanding, relational healing, or support through life transitions. Relationships—past and present—are a central part of the work we do together.
You don’t have to do this alone. Reaching out is a courageous first step, and I would be honored to support you as you move along your journey toward healing and growth.
