Meet Catherine

Catherine Herling, LmFT

“I aim to explore family patterns and themes with you and separate the helpful from the harmful in a supportive environment.”

I work with individuals, couples, and families at any life stage. I am passionate about working with clients who are interested in looking inwards and outwards to improve their lives and relationships with others. Humans during transitional periods of life often struggle balancing connectedness and independence, and allowing them to explore their identity with the support of their loved ones grants everyone the opportunity to successfully navigate these periods.

Often, people feel lost and disconnected from their loved ones during transitions and need an opportunity to voice their experience in a safe space and learn/practice alternative methods of expressing their needs within the family. If one discovers that a part of their identity includes being a member of the LGBTQ+ or neurodivergent community, there is an even greater need for connection and support from loved ones in a safe space. When there is trauma or hurt that needs to processed, I will guide you through the process and learn how to manage the parts that can be managed on your own and how to ask for help for the parts that require support from others.

Whether I’m seeing you as an individual, couple, or family, I take a collaborative, strengths-based approach, often drawing from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Gottman Method Couples Therapy (GMCT). By working with you in this manner, I aim to explore family patterns and themes with you and separate the helpful from the harmful in a supportive environment.

My Focus:

I work with families, couples, adult individuals, adolescents, and children. In particular, I specialize in helping clients cope following the diagnosis of a long-term condition or a major life event. I understand how challenging this can be for the family/ couple as a whole, as well as each individual member of the family.  I provide a warm and empathetic space where you and your loved ones can figure out what this means for their life and how to build the skills they (and you) will need to move forward in a way that is meaningful and fulfilling.
